Background: Stroke is a chronic condition that can lead to long-term disability, dependency, communication impairments, cognitive changes, as well as psychological and social issues. Given these consequences, some stroke patients require a palliative care approach to optimize their quality of life and address their physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Community health volunteers serve as a vital link between families, the broader community, and local primary healthcare centers (puskesmas), providing education and support to stroke patients within their own homes and neighborhoods.
Purpose: To determine the level of knowledge among health volunteers regarding palliative care for stroke patients in the area served by the Purwosari Community Health Center (Puskesmas), Kudus Regency.
Methods: Among 230 health volunteers, 186 (80.9%) demonstrated good knowledge of palliative care concepts, 35 (15.2%) had fair knowledge, and 9 (3.9%) had poor knowledge. Regarding the provision of palliative care support for stroke patients, 181 volunteers (78.7%) possessed good knowledge, 39 (17.0%) had fair knowledge, and 10 (4.3%) had poor knowledge. Meanwhile, concerning psychological support for the families of stroke patients, 174 volunteers (75.7%) showed good knowledge, 45 (19.6%) had fair knowledge, and 11 (4.8%) had poor knowledge.
Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 4.16 ± 1.386 to 13.08 ± 1.260, with a mean increase of 8.921 points (p<0.001). The mean behavior score increased from 4.05 ± 1.627 to 12.50 ± 1.736, with a mean increase of 8.447 points (p<0.001). These findings indicate a significant increase in caregiver knowledge and behavior after being given booklet-based health education.
Conclusion: Most health volunteers possess a good understanding of palliative care for stroke patients. However, some volunteers have only fair or poor knowledge; therefore, periodic follow-up training and education provided by the community health center (puskesmas) are necessary
